Record a video call

Which plans can record, how many minutes a month, who sees that a call is being recorded, and how long a recording is kept.

Qoorbell

Sometimes a call is worth keeping: a delivery that went wrong, a contractor’s instructions, a visitor you may need to identify later. Qoorbell can record a video call at the moment you decide to, on the plans that include it.

Which plans can record

  • Premium: 150 recording minutes a month.
  • Enterprise: 600 recording minutes a month.
  • Free and Pro do not record. The record button explains which plan includes it.

The plan sells minutes, not recordings: ten one-minute recordings use the same allowance as one ten-minute recording. Your plan screen shows the minutes used and left this month. When they run out, recording stops being available until the next month; calls themselves are not affected.

How to record

  1. Answer the ring by video. Recording is always off when a call starts.
  2. Tap Record on the call screen. It says “Starting…” for a moment.
  3. Tap Stop recording when you are done, or let the call end. You can start and stop as many times as you like during one call; each part is its own recording.

Only a call can be recorded. A ring that never opened a video call, such as a chat-only ring, has nothing to record.

Everyone in the call is told

While a recording runs, everybody in the call — the visitor at the door included — sees a notice on the video that says “This call is being recorded”, in their own language. It stays for exactly as long as the recording runs.

Rules about recording people differ between countries. Some require the other person’s consent; the on-screen notice tells them, but whether that is enough where you live is for you to check before you record.

Where recordings go and how long they last

Recordings appear under Recordings for the ring they belong to, first as “Preparing the recording…” and then ready to play. Each one shows the date it is available until.

A recording is deleted 7 days after the call. That is set by the video provider, Cloudflare RealtimeKit, which deletes the file at that point; nobody can extend it. To keep a recording, use Save to phone (or Download) before the 7 days are over.

Who can see a recording

Recordings belong to the doorbell: its owner and its members can play and save them from the ring. The visitor at the door is never a member, so only someone who answers can start a recording, and the minutes count against the owner’s plan.
