QR tags for a pet, a car or an item

Use a Qoorbell doorbell on something that moves: a dog’s collar, a car’s windscreen, a suitcase or a set of keys. What changes, and what to print it on.

Qoorbell

A doorbell does not have to be on a door. Three types exist for things that move — Vehicle, Pet and Item — and they turn a small QR tag into a way for a stranger to reach you without ever seeing your phone number.

A car, a van or a motorcycle

Someone is blocked in by your car, you left the lights on, or a parking attendant needs you. With a QR behind the windscreen they scan it and reach you right away. The poster for a vehicle reads “Owner’s contact” and “Need me to move it? Scan here”, and the visitor’s page says: “This is the owner’s doorbell. Reach them about the vehicle — no phone number needed.”

A pet

On a collar tag, the poster says “I’m lost — help me get home” and “Scan to reach my family”. Whoever finds your pet scans it with their phone and calls you by video or writes in the chat — handy when the finder speaks another language or does not want to phone a stranger.

An item

Keys, a suitcase, a laptop, a bicycle: the tag reads “If found, please scan” and “Scan to reach the owner”, and the page thanks the finder for helping it get back home.

What is different about these types

  • No geofence: something that moves can be anywhere, so these types cannot require the visitor to be at a location.
  • The wording on the poster and on the visitor’s page follows the type, as above.
  • Everything else is the same: video call or chat, availability hours on Pro and up, blocking and reporting.

To change the type of a doorbell you already have, open it, go to its details and choose Type. The setup wizard also has a Vehicle option of its own.

What to print it on

Small, tough sizes work best here: the Label (5×5 cm) reads from about 0.3 m, and the Plate (7×7 cm) from about half a metre — enough for someone holding a collar or leaning on a car window.

  • Car: a sticker on the inside of the windscreen, facing out. If it is printed on clear film, print it mirrored.
  • Pet: a sticker on a hard tag, or an acrylic tag printed with UV ink; paper will not survive a walk in the rain.
  • Items: a polymeric vinyl sticker with a matte laminate. Ask a print shop for a small run of 10–20 so you have spares.

Scan the tag in place before you rely on it: a curved collar or a tinted windscreen can make a code harder to read. If it struggles, go one size up. More on printing in Print and place your QR poster.
